Born on August 11, 1921 in Ithaca, New York to Simon Haley and Bertha Palmer, Alex Haley moved with his family to Lauderdale Co. Tennessee after his birth. As a young boy growing up, he heard stories of his African ancestors, who were brought to America as slaves. He served a long term in the Coast Guard, beginning in WWII until 1959.
In 1965, his work "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" was published and later, his best known work made "roots" a household word. That of course was "Roots: The Saga of an American Family" which was made into the blockbuster miniseries of the late 70's. In 1972, he created the Kinte Foundation to archive African-American records of historical interest.
Alex Haley died February 10, 1992 in Seattle, Washington, but his legacy lives on as our interest in finding our "roots" continues.
