MARGARET OLIVE FERGUSON MONTGOMERY

RESIDENT OF VALLEY SINCE 1872 EXPIRES FROM SHORT ILLNESS. WAS DAUGHTER OF MR. AND MRS. JAMES FERGUSON; LIVED IN BROADVIEW. Mrs. W. T. Montgomery, who rode horseback into the Kittitas Valley in 1872 and has been a resident here since that time, passed away at the Ellensburg Hospital this morning [June 30, 1930], following a short but intense illness.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Ferguson and was born in Shelton, Wash., November 22, 1868 and came across the mountains with her parents to this valley in 1872. She was married to Mr. Montgomery on December 12, 1886 and lived on a ranch in the Broadview District since the marriage till 1909 when the ranch was sold and they moved to town. Mr. Montgomery took the farm back again on November 14, 1927 where they were residing until the illness of Mrs. Montgomery, four days ago.

In making the trip from Shelton, Mrs. Ferguson rode horseback with two of her children, one of which was later to become Mrs. W. T. Montgomery. The party drove 150 head of cattle ahead of them and arrived July 24, 1872 at Robbers Roost and spent their first night on the west side of the river.

Besides her widower she is survived by Mrs. Elizabeth Ferguson, mother; five daughters, Mrs. Lydia Hayes of Sunnyside; Mrs. Lizzie Harmon of Ellensburg; Mrs. Ada Springsteen, Eugene; Mrs. Leta Bates of Ellensburg and Mrs. Hallie Uebelacker of Ellensburg; four sisters, Mrs. J. P. Harris, Mrs. George Minielly and Mrs. Bessie Phelps of Ellensburg and Mrs. Tom Morrison of Kittitas; three brothers, James Ferguson, George Ferguson and Ben Ferguson of Ellensburg; six grandchildren, Mrs. Helen Rambough, and Miss Hilda Hayes of Wapato, Glen Shipman, Tom Shipman, Sasie Lou Bates and Fay Kelly of Ellensburg.

The funeral will be held at Honeycutt’s Chapel at 10 o’clock tomorrow, Tuesday morning and will be a private service.
