R. M. KINKADE, PIONEER, DIES. FARMED IN VALLEY OVER HALF-CENTURY. Rowlin Madison (Roll) Kinkade, 86-year-old long-time Kittitas Valley resident and the last surviving son of a pioneer valley family, died last night [February 16, 1955] in Sorensen Memorial Hospital here. In ill health for some time, he had been hospitalized 12 days.
Kinkade came to the Kittitas Valley with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. David Kinkade, in September, 1882. He farmed here more than half a century before retiring in 1940. He was born in Denver, Ill., Nov. 4, 1868, and the family came here from California.
Kinkade was married to Mattie Hutson in Ellensburg, Nov. 22, 1896. The following year they purchased his father’s farm on what is now the Vantage Highway. In 1904 they bought the old Montgomery place in the Broadview District from Jake Litterer and lived there until 1940, when they moved to a home at 705 East Sixth Avenue here. The Kinkade farm on the Tjossem Road now is operated by Louis Bruketta.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Mattie Kinkade, at the home; two sons, Ralph Kinkade of Riddle, Ore., and Teddy Kinkade of Ellensburg; three daughters, Mrs. Mable Johnston of Tacoma, Mrs. Lila Martin of Yakima, and Miss Ruth Kinkade of Ellensburg, and 16 grandchildren and 20 great great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by all the other members of his immediate family, including three sisters, Mrs. Will Wright of Ellensburg, Mrs. May Bailes of Hoquiam, and Mrs. Nora Ordie of Troy, Mont., and brothers, John Kinkade of Ellensburg.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Evenson Chapel, with Rev. Dan J. Rueb officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery.
