**Addendum to Brookshire Cemetery**
The message below was sent to me by Bill and Carol Brookshire It might be nice to include it in the listing on the Brookshire Cemetery in Phelps County MO. if at all possible. Sharon Macormic
The Brookshire Family Cemetery was established in 1850 and is still maintained by members of the Brookshire family, is located on the original Spanish Land Grant ranch. The land for the cemetery was donated by Captain Nathan Brookshire[1] and is located one mile south of Interstate 10 on FM 359 South on the Brookshire Family Ranch.
Nathan Brookshire was born in Rutherford Co., Tennessee in 1773. He served bravely in the U. S. Army in the War of 1812. As a member of Steven F. Austin's Fifth Colony, he and his wife Mary Ann Hooks Brookshire, left their home in Tennessee and settled in what is now known as Brookshire, Texas area. He was awarded a Spanish Land Grant, 5 Oct. 1835, filed in the Spanish Archives of the General Land Office in Austin, Texas being part of Steven F. Austin's Fifth Colony[2]. The original Grant was for a league and labor of land consisting of 4,426 acres.
In 1836 Capt. Brookshire was awarded a bounty certificate of 640 acres of land for his military service. He participated in the storming and capture of Bexar[3], Dec. 5 - 10, 1835. A Historic Marker was erected to his valor by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, State of Texas in 1930. This marker is now located in the town of Brookshire[4]. In 1839 the "Captain Bird/Creek Indian Fight" Capt. Brookshire succeeded to command upon Capt. Bird's death[5].
