Grant 1944 New York Marriages Marriage Notice - Stowell / De Greve (1944) William Averill Stowell, s/o William Henry Harrison Stowell and Emma Clara Averill to Edith De Greve (former wife of Baron Ernst de Greve) - Dec 14, 1944, New York New York Times Nuptials are Held for Mrs De Greve- She is Wed to Dr William Stowell in Marble Collegiate - Daughter is Attendant. Mrs Edith de Greve of 325 East Seventy-Ninth Street was married yesterday afternoon [Dec 14, 1944] to Dr William Averill Stowell of Riomar, Vero Beach, Fla., in the Marble Collegiate Church by Rev. Paul R Dickie. The bride was attended by her daughter, Mrs Harrison V. Smith of this city, and the bridegroom had for his best man his son, Lieut. (j.g.) Eldon Stowell, USNR. A small reception was given afterward at the bride's home. Mrs Stowell and her first husband, Baron Ernst de Greve, were divorced. Dr Stowell, son of the late Mr and Mrs William Henry Harrison Stowell of Appleton, Wis, is research adviser at the Buffalo Museum of Science and also field associate in geography there. He graduated from Princeton University and from the Sorbonne in Paris and in 1908 received from John Hopkins University a Ph.D degree. Subsequently he was Professor of Romance Languages at Randolph-Macon Woman's College and at Amherst College. Dr Stowell is the author of several books and of magazines articles on French historic and literary subjects, In 1918 he was attached to the military intelligence section of the United States Army in New York. His former wife, who was Miss Mabel Gardner, died last year. Dr Stowell has another son, Capt Averill Stowell, UAUS Medical Corps, who is serving overseas.
