Submitted by Bill and Jo Ann Lewis *********************************************************** Pike County Obituary Troy Messenger, 1 Nov. 1911 EX-CONFEDERATE SOLDIER DIED SUNDAY, OCT. 20TH R. G. Starling, one of Pike county's oldest citizens, died Sunday at his home four miles southeast of Troy on the Brundidge road, at the age of eighty-one years. He had resided at that place for the past sixty-one years. Mr. Starling was born in 1830. He was the father of fifteen children, eleven of whom, five sons and six daughters, survive him. His second wife also survives him. He served in the War Between the States in Company "E" 53rd Alabama, under Captain I. A. Wilson. He was a splendid old man and his many friends regret his death. The burial occurred at the Starling Cemetery at 11 o'clock this morning, the funeral service being con-ducted by Elder M. V. **********************************8
